If you’re using Instagram Stories, IGTV, and your regular feed to showcase a variety of content, you might think you’re using Instagram to the fullest. However, you are likely overlooking one of Instagram’s most under-utilized features: Instagram fonts.
Instagram fonts, you say? Isn’t Instagram an image platform?
Yes, Instagram is a visual platform. What draws people to your account is the quality of the images and videos you post. But the text you publish is important too.
You want to write engaging captions and create a bio that converts casual visitors into long term followers or even customers. Instagram fonts are a great way to make this text, and by proxy your entire Instagram profile, stand out.
What are Instagram fonts?
Instagram fonts allow users to change the font for information in your bio, name, or even posts to match your style or aesthetic. It is a small change, but it is a creative way to make your Instagram bio stand out and highlight your personal style.
Here is an example, from Instagrammer flipandstyle. She uses unique Instagram fonts on both her bio and her name:
Designer Gavin Strange uses Instagram fonts to liven up his name and make a unique impression:
You can also use Instagram fonts in your Instagram posts, like violinist and model Johanna Moresco did in a recent post.
She used a different font to make a Jack Kerouac quote stand out from the rest of her Instagram text:
There are hundreds of unique Instagram fonts to choose from, including these examples from a tool called Lingo Jam. (We’ll review a few tools in a later section.)
Why use Instagram fonts?
Generally, all Instagram bios contain the same old information. Your picture, Instagram name, number of posts and followers, as well as your name, a short bio, and that one single link we all get on Instagram. You can also add Story Highlights, which appear as circles above your posts.
Here’s what nearly everyone’s Instagram bio looks like:
That is all we get. There really isn’t a ton of ways to be creative. Other than the short bio and the picture, there aren’t many ways to customize your Instagram bio.
This is why many people have turned to Instagram fonts to liven up their bio! They are fun and can be a unique way to express your personality.
When is it a bad idea to use Instagram fonts?
Instagram fonts are fun to use, but a bit casual. If your Instagram profile is more business-oriented or professional, it might be best to stick with the standard Instagram font rather than getting creative.
Do keep in mind that there are a ton of different fonts. So while a cursive font might not work for your business profile, a typewriter font may work just fine. Before changing your font, think about how it will reflect on your business and make sure the change is on-brand for you.
How do I change the font on my Instagram bio?
To change the font in your bio, you will need to use a third-party tool or keyboard extension.
Here’s how it works: Just type your message into the Instagram font generator, select the font you want to use, then copy and paste the text from the generator to your profile.
Here is a step by step guide to changing your Instagram bio font using the tools we’ll explore in this post:
- Choose one of the Instagram font tools from the list below.
- Open the tool and type out your new bio. Just remember you are still limited to 150 characters. Using different fonts that use unique characters might cut into the amount of information you can share.
- Choose the font you like best. Feel free to scroll through all the options; some of the tools have more than 90 different fonts to choose from.
- Once you have the font you like, copy and paste it.
- Head over to Instagram, then tap on the person icon in the bottom right corner. This will take you to your Instagram profile.
- Select “Edit profile”, located just under your bio.
- Tap “Bio” and delete your current text, then paste the text from your font tool.
And you are done! You can also use fonts on your “name” as well. (Just remember the name is different from your user name.)
Where can I get fonts for Instagram?
Now that you know what Instagram fonts are and how to use them, let’s talk about font tools. There are plenty of options, including apps, websites, and even custom keyboards. Most use Unicode, which is an international text coding system. Unicode does not work on all devices, but it works well on iPhones and most Androids.
Here are a few of my favorite Instagram font tools for you to try. Note that you can edit the font even after it is generated, so if you don’t like a specific emoticon or icon, you can delete it before posting.
1. Instafonts
Looking for an easy to use font site that can change regular text into a variety of interesting fonts, including emoticons, italics, and old typewriter text? You may like Instafonts.
This is a browser-based Instagram font tool with plenty of options, including these ones below:
This is an incredibly easy to use font tool. Simply type the phrase you want to display in the top box, then scroll through the different font options. There are more than 90 different fonts to choose from, which makes it easy to create a really unique bio.
When you find a font you love, simply copy the text, then paste it into your Instagram bio.
2. Sprezz
Sprezz is a bit different from other Instagram font platforms— it isn’t a copy and paste tool, but rather an entirely new keyboard for your mobile device.
This also means you can type in different fonts directly on Instagram, rather than having to copy and paste the text. That makes it far more convenient to use if you love using different fonts!
Here are a few examples of fonts you can use, from their app page:
Sprezz features a total of 50 different fonts you can use to post on Instagram, change your bio, text, or post to other social media and chat platforms like Facebook, Twitter, WeChat, Kik, and WhatsApp.
This is a free app, but additional themes are available for an additional cost. It is compatible with all Apple devices running iOS 8 or later.
3. Fonts App for Google Play
Made specifically for Android devices, the Fonts App for Google Play offers more than 140 different Instagram font options, including a variety of colors, shapes, and fun icons. Their fonts can be used on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as calendars, contacts, and task management tools.
Like other options on this list, you simply type in your message, then copy and paste the text to your desired location. While the app itself is free, there are in-app purchases.
4. LingoJam’s Fonts for Instagram
This is a simple browser-based Instagram font generator. LingoJam’s Fonts for Instagram is super easy to use and offers a ton of fun and unique fonts and emoticons to choose from. Here are a few of the most unique fonts they offer:
Simply head to their Fonts for Instagram page, type out your message, then scroll through the dozens of font options. Then, copy and paste to your Instagram bio. And you are done! No downloading an app or keyboard, which is nice!
The makers do note that the fonts are created using Unicode, so some phones might not support all the characters, but they are updated regularly and seem to work for most devices. I had no issues posting from a Chrome browser.
5. Cool Fancy Text Generator
The Cool Fancy Text Generator is another copy and paste font generator, but it stands out due to the huge range of fonts including tattoo fonts, calligraphy, web script, old English, and much more.
In addition to the fonts above, they also offer several ways to add characters above and below your text, like these:
Want to add unique emoticons or other symbols? They’ve got you covered there too with hundreds of symbols including scissors, copyright, trademark, percentages, currency, brackets, astrological signs, math symbols, and much, more.
In addition to all those symbols and emoticons, Cool Symbols (the tool’s main site) also has Text Art Pictures, which are unique art pieces created by combining text and symbols. These won’t fit in an Instagram bio, of course, but they can be used for posts or post replies.
The fonts, symbols, and art pictures can all be copied and pasted into Instagram, Facebook, WeChat, or any other platform you like!
6. Meta Tags Font Generator
The Meta Tags Font Generator one of the best Instagram font generators on the market, in my humble opinion. Here’s why I like it so much: It allows you to preview exactly what your text will look like in your Instagram bio before you copy and paste.
This happens on their website, so you don’t have to log in to see how your brand spanking new font will look in your bio. They have a ton of font options to choose from, including underline, strikethrough, all caps, circular, black pill, and, “price is wrong,” which makes your text look like it’s on the board at The Price is Right.
If you are looking for a no-nonsense font generator, this is one is a great place to start.
How to use Instagram fonts on Instagram Stories
Instagram stories, as you may already know if you love Instagram, has a feature called Instagram Stories, which can be customized in a variety of ways, including adding filters, emoticons, music, polls, and drawings. Instagram Stories also allows users to choose from five different fonts including strong, modern, and typewriter.
If you want to change Instagram fonts in your stories beyond the already provided fonts, here’s how to do it:
- Go to the font generator of your choice from the list above.
- Type the phrase you want to add to your Instagram stories, including emoticons. (Note that tags won’t work yet.)
- Choose the font you like best.
- Copy and paste the text from your font generator. Make sure to “select all” to ensure all of your text copies.
- Open Instagram, then Instagram stories
- Tap on a picture and select “paste.”
You are done! Note that some devices may show your font as open boxes or weird characters. If that happens, it may mean your device doesn’t yet support Unicode characters. Try another browser or a different device.
Final thoughts on using Instagram fonts
Instagram fonts are a fun way to create a unique Instagram bio, stories, or posts.
Most of the tools are free and easy to use, which means you can update your Instagram game with just a few taps!
However, brands or users with a professional Instagram profile should think twice before using these fonts. Casual brands — like a fashion or beauty related businesses — may find using Instagram fonts is on-brand. However, more serious brands such as a business coach or financial advisor may find that using Instagram fonts results in followers not taking their business seriously.
Above all, have fun with Instagram fonts! Experiment, change them out every week, or add new characters for the holidays. With Instagram fonts, the sky’s the limit!
